A MOTHER OF A PROJECT: THE PILGRIMAGE

Join artists Lucy Thane and Oriana Fox as they traverse a route through Hackney and Tower Hamlets on the bank holiday sunday! Become involved in the debate, exploring and exploding contemporary perceptions of motherhood via performance and embodied discussion.
Celebrating both motherhood and childlessness, a diverse group of adults and children will travel a route by boat, through parks and a pub, collaborating and creating; making banners, swapping stories and playing; to create an alternative matriarchal mythos in a state of heightened attention and joy. We would particularly like to encourage people with children and also people who don’t generally spend time with children.
Motherhood plays some role in every person's life. We wish to broaden the perception of what motherhood can mean to the individual, as well as within language and society. Could mothering be usefully employed as a model or inspiration for government and other forms of social organisation? Should ‘mothering’ be an activity exclusive to parents? Is adulthood toxic for children? What is the compulsion to have (your own) children?

Pilgrimage Locations:
- Meet in Guest projects studios for warmups and games
- Activity filled Boat-ride along Regent’s (Birth) canal from Broadway market to Victoria Park.
- Ceremony at Gunmaker Bridge (Victoria Park)
- Pizza at Mother’s Arms (Former Mother and Baby advice centre, now lord Morpeth pub)
- Procession through Victoria Park
- Towpath procession back to base of buggies, wheelchairs etc (with boat-ride for the weary)
