UNKNOWN FUTURES: altMFA's group artist residency at Guest Projects, 2017
1 - 7 May 2017
Open Meeting
Tuesday 2nd May
6:30 - 9pm
We're kicking off our Guest Projects residency with our weekly meeting - open to everyone. Come join us, get an idea of what AltMFA is and help us share and learn together.
Please note// Reading for meeting is: (Just the Conclusion of) Naomi Klein's 'This changes everything' Capitalism VS The Climate. PDF here.
In these tumultuous times we are embarking on our new a-n funded programme about Unknown Futures, and will be exploring this during our residency.
Bring an object, text, image or idea related to the theme - be it something by someone you've found to be provoking or inspiring or something from your own practice.
Bring a snack to share as well!
You might also want to bring a miniature artwork (could be a text, a drawing, painting, photograph, print, sculpture, assemblage, readymade, etc) for inclusion in the Small House Gallery at Guest Projects miniature exhibition in a dolls house. The miniature show will be selected by Eldi Dundee as part of her ongoing curation project that is Small House Gallery. Further info (and dimensions) here.
No need to book for the Open Meeting, just ring the Guest Projects doorbell.
Admission free.

Both Days:
Eldi Dundee will be in the space doing experimental on the spot readings using a variety of oracle tools including: tarot, tea leaves, runes, crystal ball, palmistry and maybe, if we're lucky, she'll actually be right! A playful look at the seductive charm of divination through the rational/irrational lenses of agnosticism.
Small House Gallery (a contemporary art gallery in a dolls house) will be in at Guest Projects throughout the weekend showing miniature works by AltMFA and guest artists. Facebook @SmallHouseGallery

altMFA: Multi-Function 25 July – 23 October 2016 curated by John Ros (GalleryELL) The liberal arts have been under attack for some time. Many cannot see the value of education away from vocations or trades because it is hard to quantify the value of such education. To read more click here.. |
AltMFA: Collective as Family
RA Burlington Gardens Summer Festival Saturday 2nd July 2016 12- 6pm Join Alt MFA at this summer street party behind the RA building this weekend! |
After completing residencies at Yinka Shonibare's Guest Projects in 2015 and 2016, AltMFA explore their collective as family through collaborating with each other and family members. To echo our structure we will base all artists at the AltMFA stall with works spiralling out into the festival. Meet at the stall at times throughout the day to view performances and happenings that will lead you across the festival...
Shinji Toya. Exploring his memory of his Japanese father, Shinji hosts visits to view his site-specific digital video that reflects the memory oscillating between remembering and forgetting.
Anousha Payne captures family members through a 3D scanning technique creating distorted imagery.
Amy Leung is collaborating with her mother; live printing from a dead tree they felled together in their garden. Wood-printed postcards, inspired by Shonibare's patterns, are distributed at the AltMFA stall throughout the day.
Johanna Bolton. Read your future with elastic bands- how far can you stretch your mind?
Sadie Edginton re-imagines AltMFA as an art collective from 100 years ago, creating Dada inspired costumes. Working from sketches by her family, foldout paper geometric costumes will be printed and activated by other AltMFA members and the public.
Nathania Hartley. Tap into the city with Nathania Hartley on a group art walk around the surrounding streets– bring a few pennies if you would like to make temporary tap shoes! Meet at the AltMFA stall at 2pm & 4pm.

On Saturday 11th June 2016 we held The Alternative Art Education Summit for Anti - University Weekend.
In conjunction with School of the Damned, Open School East, The Syllabus (the other alternative art education programmes holding residencies at Guest Projects during May) we held a discussion and a dinner. Amy Leung's practice and project inspired us to make plates, bowls and dishes for serving the spiralised madness that came out of Guest Projects Kitchen. We started with tasty cocktails by OSE on their fancy bar in the corner. The Syllabus came out with 1970's style prawn cocktail starters, followed by our spiralled mains served in spirally pots, then SOTD laid out a great spread of home made cakes and jellies. Wow. Open School East: Drinks The Syllabus: Starters AltMFA: Mains School of the Damned: Dessert AltMFA based itself at Guest Projects from 3rd-11th May 2016
We had our second Residency, after last year. In a month programmed where other alternative art schools were all offered over a week for a 'degree show'. We had Open meetings, with food, and our event on on Saturday 7th May. Sat 7th May, 12:00–21:00 Circumbendibus with Alt MFA Gallery Open from 12pm 5pm Spiralised Cocktails 6pm Live acts, Artists' films, and Food (BYOB and food to spiral) "Using the term Circumbendibus, AltMFA describe their group process of cyclical discussions and roundabout decisions which have impacted this year's residency themes. Through creating links across the project space room, AltMFA will map connections through assorted art works and objects made by different members. These will be in flux through the week's residency as new works are added or created by members. These squiggles and twists continue through the consumables of the evening. Join us at our temporary base at Guest Projects, though this time when four alternative art schools will be occupying the building over 5 weeks. Featuring works in progress from our current members and associates." |

The Value of the Alternative Art Monthly Magazine: April 2016
"Sara Jaspan asks whether alternative art education is valuable as a project in its own right.
"Inflated tuition fees have commoditised education to the extent that there is now not only a sense of buying a degree (perpetuating what Gareth Jones calls an 'acquisitive but not inquisitive' society), but even of a certain expected level of 'customer service' from tutors, reversing the traditional power balance."
