Neela Basu
Louise Ashcroft on Neela Basu
"Not figurative; disfigurative, formless. She said. Your body still looks whole from the outside - no one will notice that I have climbed inside and dissected you from within using a knife and fork. Swabs of lung as makeshift sponges stop you from seeping out of your own nose. Orifice politics, she said, but I can't remember the joke. All of the organs have been reconfigured so they flow differently and the digestive system reverses half way like the brown sludge of the estuary at pontoon dock. When I was small I would sit on your knee and beg to touch your eyes. I wanted to press them between my finger and my thumb and feel them burst; not in a violent way."
Neela Basu's response
"Seductive like pulling teeth. Open wide, say aaaaaah. A slip-slide slimy dribble, degenerate vehicle for the unsaid. Excessively, threateningly vulnerable and open. A greedy pathos- look at me and I will devour you; passively agressive, agressively passive. Snorting out humour loudly and awkwardly through every orifice, an expulsion of the repressed."
